Recommended Reads

I love to read.  Unfortunately, I only have the time to read during Winter, Spring, and Summer Breaks.  I am usually too busy during the school year to pick up a book.  My favorite genre is Historical Fiction, but I also enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy.  Below are some of my all time favorite books.

The Shining – Stephen King

The Shining

I love to read Stephen King, but my favorite book was The Shining.  A family is hired to take care of a Colorado Hotel during the winter season.  Unfortunately, the hotel is haunted and causes problems for the family. 





Snow Flower and the Secret Fan – Lisa See

Snow Flower and the Secret FanThis story is about two girls who become best friends in 19th Century China.  A misunderstanding ultimately threatens their long friendship.





The House at Riverton – Kate Morgan

The House at Riverton

This book takes place in England during the early 1900’s.  A young man commits suicide and a servant girl and two sisters are the only witnesses.  The story follows the life of the young servant girl as she unravels the many secrets kept at Riverton.





 The Lord of the Rings – J.R.R. Tolkien

The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is as follows:

  • The Fellowship of the Ring
  • The Two Towers
  • The Return of the King (my favorite)

A powerful ring falls into the hands of hobbits in a time when a dark lord is coming back to reclaim his kingdom.  The ring must be destroyed to prevent the dark lord’s terror. 



 The Chronicles of Narnia – C.S. Lewis

The Chronicles of Narnia (#1-7)

The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of 7 books describing the adventures of four young children in a magical world.

  • The Magicians Nephew (my favorite)
  • The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe
  • The Horse and His Boy
  • Prince Caspian
  • The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (my favorite)
  • The Silver Chair
  • The Last Battle (my favorite)



 Earth’s Children – Jean Auel

The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earths Children 1)

This 6 book series is the story of a young girl in Ice Age Europe and the many challenges she faces after her family dies in an earthquake.  I particularly enjoyed learning how people of this era lived day by day.

  • The Valley of the Horses
  • The Mammoth Hunters
  • The Plains of Passage
  • The Shelters of Stone (my favorite)
  • The Land of Painted Caves



Harry Potter – J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)

These 7 books chronicle the life of young wizard Harry Potter as he battles his nemesis Voldemort while studying at Hogwarts School of Wizardry.  Rowling is an amazing writer that kept me engaged for hours at a time.
