An Athlete…me??

If you knew me in highschool, you would know that I am NOT an athlete.  I was actually very far from it.  My best friend and I used to have PE together and would try to do the absolute minimum to prevent sweating.  I was a “beginner” swimmer for my entire highschool experience, because my PE teacher knew that was all she was getting out of me.  I was not about to swim laps and practice diving, so she let me use the paddleboards in the last lane with a few other kids.  Oh, I could swim…I just didn’t want to.

Well, 13 years later, I am sweating…on purpose.  I play indoor soccer and I run, for fun.   This “athlete” is far from the person I knew in highschool.  It is a new world that I wish I had participated in much earlier in my life.   I originally chose these activities because I thought they would be easy…boy was I wrong!

My stepmom bugged me to play soccer for at least a year before I finally decided to join the team.  I thought, I’ll play once a week and maybe lose some “baby” weight.  After the first game, I realized I was completely out of my league.  It was HARD!!  And I was terrible.  I was slow and out of breath too quickly.  I didn’t know the rules and I had no idea what to do or where to go.   Everyone on my team was very helpful.  They yelled from the sidelines and from the field and directed my every move.  I was then bit by the soccer bug.  I absolutely loved it!  I wanted to become better and faster.

So, I decided that I needed to start running so I could improve my reflexes and my speed.  I began on the treadmill and 23 minutes later, had completed my first mile.  Who was I kidding??  I ran maybe 1% of that mile.  I was on the treadmill every night that I could break away from the family, trying to improve my time.  But, progress was slow, very slow.

A year later, I am still improving.  I have knocked off 10 minutes from my original time for a mile.  I am now running, because I like it.  With a little help from my friends: The Black Eyed Peas, Pink, Blondie, and The David Crowder Band, I am crusing the local high school track 3 miles at a time.  Although I still can’t run a whole mile, I am getting faster.  I realized that I really enjoy running.  I have this strange goal of actually participating in a marathon.  I’m not sure if I will be able to take on 26.2 miles,  but I am going to keep working and try to run a 5K first.

I am still NOT an athlete, but I like to think that maybe one day I can become one!

  1. Ok. I am hooked! You gotta keep writing and let me know how the running keeps going. You ALMOST inspire me to start running again:)

  2. Woot for blogging!! I think you’ll love it, it is amazing how easy it is to share what you are thinking. It’s much easier than the occasional e-mail.

I am super proud of you for the running!! I have never been athletic either, but i do agree there is something soothing and other wordly calm about running. Keep it up!!
